Creamy Fruit Salad

For an easy dessert that doesn’t require any last minute attention, try this Slow-Cooker Apple Brown Betty. I’ve been making it for years, and I love it because it reminds me of homemade apple pie, but it doesn’t require the work involved in making the crust. You actually use regular white bread cubes, and then you toss them with melted butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar. Here’s what the bread cubes look like after you toss them with the sugar and spices.

Then you layer chopped Golden Delicious apples with the sugary bread cubes in a slow-cooker, and 2-1/2 hours later you’ve got a nice hot dessert ready for a scoop of vanilla ice cream. A delicious choice for a fall dessert.

Serves 6
5 slices of white bread, cut into 1″ cubes
1/2 cup butter, melted
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
5 Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
vanilla ice cream (optional)
In a medium bowl, mix bread cubes with melted butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt and brown sugar. Arrange in alternate layers with apples in a slow cooker. Cover and cook on High for 2-1/2 hours or until apples are tender. Serve warm with ice cream, if desired.
